REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–February 4, 2015–AltspaceVR today announced the general availability of its software for Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus. Using Samsung Galaxy devices and Gear VR, users can download AltspaceVR directly from the Oculus Store to meet and interact with others in VR.
AltspaceVR is the only cross-platform VR communication solution, allowing interaction between users of Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Most VR experiences are solitary, but AltspaceVR users can meet together in VR to explore environments, enjoy multi-player games, attend events, or watch streaming video such as YouTube, Twitch, or Periscope. AltspaceVR provides the widest range of capabilities and activities in social VR, including a web browser so users can share content from anywhere on the internet.
“Our focus at AltspaceVR is creating the most natural and fulfilling communication experience possible online, and we’re thrilled to bring it to Gear VR,” said AltspaceVR Founder & CEO Eric Romo. “AltspaceVR on Gear VR brings nearly all the features of our PC experience, but with the ease of use of mobile.”
Until now, the social VR and other capabilities of AltspaceVR have been delivered through well-equipped PCs, typically configured with high-end processors and video cards for video gaming applications, keyboards and other input devices. Due to recent development breakthroughs, AltspaceVR can now provide essentially the same capabilities using only the resources of a smartphone. As a result, Samsung Gear VR users can enjoy a full-featured AltspaceVR experience that is mobile, simple, and low cost.
When Gear VR Users enter AltspaceVR they will see a variety of games, activities, and events. They can join friends in AltspaceVR to experience a new dimension of communication and spontaneous interaction. For example, they can laugh together and even participate on stage as comics push the envelope of their art during Improv Night in VR, or learn together in a French, Spanish, or meditation class.
For developers, the AltspaceVR Software Development Kit (SDK) makes it easy to create apps in VR that work for both PC and mobile environments.
AltspaceVR supports Samsung Gear VR across all compatible Samsung Galaxy devices, which are Galaxy Note 5, S6 edge+, S6, and S6 edge.
