Today, we are announcing plans to sunset support for the Samsung GearVR headset. While we have greatly enjoyed developing for a platform that has, for many, been a catalyst into virtual reality, we have decided to consolidate our mobile-VR line in response to a changing marketplace. This decision will allow us to better prioritize our core audience and continue to develop a product that maximizes accessibility and functionality for all.
Last summer Samsung confirmed their own discontinuation of the GearVR line when their Galaxy Note 10 (+Plus) devices were announced incompatible with the system. More recently, there was an announcement that the Oculus SDK will no longer support the GearVR platform. In general, it seems that mobile-VR has gone in a different direction and many developers continue to respond to the pivot.
Virtual Reality’s road into the consumer market has been long, but it has been treaded by great people. We’d like to thank all of the Altspacers on the GearVR who have been with us for the journey. We hope you’ll continue to enjoy AltspaceVR on alternative platforms, including 2D mode on PC.
AltspaceVR will officially sunset GearVR support on June 22, 2020. We will continue to support the Oculus Go, Quest, Rift/Rift-S, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets, as well as 2D mode for PCs.
