Obama’s farewell address in VR

Posted on January 12, 2017

Last night, a group came together in AltspaceVR to watch President Obama deliver his farewell address to the nation. The mood was tranquil and respectful as avatars from around the world quietly gathered to view the president’s live streamed speech. It felt only appropriate to watch the address in the presence of others, as Obama delivered lines like “democracy does require a basic sense of solidarity” and “we’re all in this together”.

After Obama issued his final ask as president — ‘I’m asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about change, but in yours’ — the room erupted in a combination of cheers, bittersweet murmurs of “I’m going to miss him”, and finally culminated with the entire room singing the national anthem. Following the address, the VR halls echoed with nostalgia-filled conversations and predictions of what’s to come.
