We’re Piloting Live Speech Captioning & Translation

Posted on July 27, 2020

Hello everyone! In the spirit of further empowering authentic self-expression and making it increasingly easier to connect with others in AltspaceVR, we are excited to announce that beginning this week we will start to pilot live speech captioning and translation in select AltspaceVR events.

While captioning and even live translation are slowly becoming the new norm for things like online videos or user-to-user mobile apps, implementing this technology in a social VR context is a new frontier. Captioning and translating multiple simultaneous audio streams is a big leap forward! To minimize the impact on our core experience, and to map out our learning process, we are starting small and limiting this pilot to the following events:

Meet the Program Owner of AltspaceVR
Last Wednesday of each month
Next Event: Wednesday, July 29 at 5:00p PT/ 8:00p ET
Host: Keegan

Community Meetup
First three Wednesdays of each month
Next Event: Wednesday, August 5 at 5:00p PT/8:00p ET
Host: QforQ

Please join us for any (or all) of these upcoming events if you’d like to try captioning and live translation for yourself.

To enable the feature, join the event and go to SETTINGS > AUDIO. From there you can toggle CAPTIONS on/off, choose which language you’d like to translate to, and more.

To start, we will have eight languages available for translation:

  • English
  • German
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese

We’re really excited and proud to be launching this pilot. We hope that with it, we will be able to lay the groundwork for furthering social VR’s usability as a tool for deep and genuine connection. For now, our goal is to info-gather and better understand the scope and potential scale of this type of language technology.
